Back in 1993, a small group of snowmobilers known as the Alaska Trailblazers arrived in Dawson City from Tok, Alaska. This group journeyed over the Top of the World Highway in winter which back then was unheard of. Today, it is the "Yukon's Premiere Snowmobile Event".
In 1994, the Alaska Trailblazers were approached and plans were made to try and organize a few events for their visit. It turned out that 100 snowmobilers made the "Trek". A few events were organized and with the support of the Klondike Visitors Association, Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall was opened for our visitors.
In the next few years the popularity of the run has been tremendous. The number of runs were increased and also the length of stay. Today we have the potential for 200 participants on each of the three runs that do occur.
Participants are from the United States,Canada and Europe. The majority are from our neighbors in Alaska, but we have numerous persons who travel from the Lower 48 just to participate. Over the years we have had numerous states represented, from New York, Florida, California, Washington and in between.
With the support of Dawson's businesses and organizations, the Trek continues to be very successful. The Trek has helped create a winter tourism market in Dawson. The economic benefit to the community has had a major effect. A good example is the Trek Over Top Coupon book that is produced.Supporting businesses include a coupon in the book which is dropped off at their business. The grand prize is gold jewellery. We have over 30 businesses participate.
Over the years the Trek has received a number of awards. The Trek was the Territorial Winner of the "Attractions Canada Award." In years past we have received awards from the Dawson City Chamber of Commerce and the Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon.
2010 will be 17 years that the Trek will be hosting our visitors. So come and join us for the party.
